June
of 2006 I attended the 5th International Space Syntax Symposium in
Delft, Holland. There was much interesting work presented at this
conference but the one paper that really caught my attention was “Up,
Across, and Along” by Tim Ingold. Here is a link to this paper:
I also stumbled upon a really wonderful
building, the library at the Technical University of Delft, where
the conference was held. This strikes me as an example of a building
with a green roof that truly is the architecture, not just something
stuck on the top. I apologize for not having the name of the architect
and being able to give her (or him) credit.
Delft is also a truly remarkable
city. It is completely walkable and integrates water, people, bicycles
and cars in a way that no city planner ever could have imagined.
“Space Syntax” is the
research program and discipline created by my Professor, Bill Hillier,
at University College London where I did my Masters degree. These
are the links to the University program and to the consulting firm,
“Space Syntax Limited.”
Here is a link that is a good explanation
of Space Syntax. This should be credited to John Peponis who does
Space Syntax based work at Georgia Tech University:
